BY DEFAULT, I DON’T RECOGNIZE THE RETURN OF PALPATINE AS CANON TO MY BLOG – I PORTRAY SNOKE AS HIS OWN ENTITY, AN ANCIENT DARK SIDE USER, BUT NOT A SITH LORD. ( ON A SYMBOLIC LEVEL, HE REPRESENTS KYLO’S MISPLACED FAITH, A GOD IN THE KNIGHT’S MIND, THUS WITH HIS DEATH, KYLO ASSUMES HIS ROLE, BECOMING THE GOD OF HIMSELF ) HE FELT THE RAW POWER IN BEN SOLO BEFORE HE WAS BORN, AND DUG HIS CLAWS WITHIN BEN’S MIND WITHIN THE WOMB IN ORDER TO EXPLOIT IT.✦ with this i should also note that whilst i recognize snoke as the catalyst for kylo's descent into the dark, as a force far beyond his control, ( toying with the idea of the circular narrative and the inescapable fate ) it is still kylo's own selfish motivations and immense hunger for power that make up the sum of his villainy.

KYLO’S INFATUATION WITH VADER’S LEGACY WAS MANUFACTURED BY SNOKE, WHO THOUGHT HE’D BE EASIER TO MANIPULATE THIS WAY. IN ACTUALITY, KYLO’S ALWAYS FELT SUFFOCATED BY HIS FAMILIAL TIES, AND HAS SOUGHT TO SEVER THEM – IT’S EASY FOR HIM TO LET GO OF VADER IN TLJ, BECAUSE, THOUGH HE GREATLY RESPECTS HIS GRANDFATHER, HE WAS NEVER EAGER TO BECOME LIKE HIM. KYLO WANTED TO FORGE HIS OWN IDENTITY FROM THE START – BUT HE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO.

KYLO IS AN IMMENSELY SKILLED FORCE USER & DUELIST; I FEEL LIKE THIS DIDN’T COME ACROSS THAT WELL throughout THE TRILOGY, GIVEN HOW UNDERMINED HE WAS AT EVERY TURN – IN ANY CASE, KYLO IS BOTH INNATELY GIFTED WITH THE FORCE, AS WELL AS HIGHLY TRAINED IN COMBAT. in particular, he favours a more modified and unorthodox method and stance, given that he trained under snoke, who himself was not aligned with any particular dark side cult. ultimately, kylo's DOWNFALL IS HIS VOLATILE MENTAL STATE, WHICH MAKES HIS TACTICS ERRATIC and at times, even sloppy.

KYLO IS AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR. THIS IS MADE IMPORTANT AT VARIOUS POINTS. PARTICULARLY, WITHIN MY OWN CANON, THE CONCEPT OF LUKE RAISING HIS SABER TO KYLO WAS A FABRRICATION; KYLO’S OWN PARANOID HALLUCINATION. OVERALL, IN THE YEARS LEADING UP TO HIS LEAVING, KYLO, THEN BEN SOLO, GREW INCREASINGLY CAUTIOUS OF HIS FRIENDS & FAMILY, SENSING FEAR / BETRAYAL / ETC. AT EVERY TURN, DUE TO SNOKE'S MANIPULATIONS. his mental state was already on a decline, pushed further along by snoke. his anger became more prominent, he was impatient and constantly on edge. this carries over well into his time with the order, though he begins healing from it following snoke's death, which allows him a moment of clarity after years of yielding to the haunted crevices of his mind.

ben solo had been dead since the beginning. born to a legacy, the son of war-hero han solo & the rebellion's beloved leia organa, ben always felt suffocated by the weight of his birthright. the chains of a lineage held him down to a certain standard; sometimes, sitting at the kitchen table, his father would hesitate before clasping his shoulder, hand hovering as if the touch would burn him. in the dead off night, ben would wake up dreaming of dead planets and burning bodies and the holographic lights would quiver, flickering with the magnitude of inherited power, and his father would stand at the archway of the door to his quarters, as if held back by an invisible barrier, concern etched into his features. his father loved him, ben did not much doubt, but he never knew what to do with him.his mother would fuss over him in the mornings, standing in the hall before her senatorial conference, which she had insisted he attend with her to glimpse into her world of governance. her hands held his face as she fixed his hair, his clothes. her fingers would trace the cut of his cheek, the slope of his nose and the curls of his dark hair, and she would see her father, who is not her father but her nightmare, and her hands would tremble.at night, though, a creature would smile with its rows of teeth, something ancient and ravenous, and ben would indulge its presence with a child's curiosity. he'd ask this being questions that his parents would not entertain, and he would practice the tricks that his mother did not approve of, bending the force to his will.

if snoke's promises of power and afraid of feeding her son's resentment & wild tendencies any further, leia insisted he be taken to luke's academy to train in the ways of the jedi. he'd heard his mother arguing with his father. han did not want him to go, in fear of losing him. his mother had gone silent after that.
at the academy, the name and skills granted at the behest of his lineage were often more of a hindrance than anything; he kept to himself and found no need to make friends of the other children when he had so little in common with them. his power grew vast as did his confidence, the extent of his abilities hinting at something more vicious. his uncle disapproved of these displays, though his disapproval only spurred ben into a stubborn adamancy.a bygone doctrine, he had called the jedi teachings after an incident in the training yard, the burned arm of his classmate reeking of charred flesh where ben's saber had nearly severed it. the smell filled ben's senses. one should not be faulted for capability; a bird does not mourn the worm it gulps down. outdated, inefficient, bound to repeat the mistakes of the past, a falsehood of peace.the shadows in only grew bolder, endorsing his dark desires. why shouldn't he sate his hunger? why not take more than he could? over the course of the next few years, he practiced the subtle adaptation of jedi teachings, sharpening them to his taste, making a knife of the force to slice into his raw desires.the devil came bearing promises of power unimaginable. he took that deal with little deliberation.after slaughtering his way through luke skywalker’s academy, ben solo ran away into the night with a handful of students, following the enticing voice that had trailed him through his mother’s womb and into the light, never giving him silence within the confines of his own mind. it is kylo ren that emerged from the ruin: jedi killer, master of the knights of ren, and apprentice to the fearsome supreme leader snoke.

in some dreams, the jedi temple was red and burning. the sound of crackling wood turned to fabric which turned to flesh. in these dreams, ren stood to the side like a specter and felt nothing but a dull remembrance, like recollecting something out a story that had never actually happened. a fabrication, a reconstruction of the past.in the aftermath of the jedi academy's destruction, ren and his companions sought out supreme leader snoke. kylo killed ren prime, the old leader of the knights of ren, and any of the knights who refused to swear allegiance. those that bent the knee, he kept.he began his official training as snoke’s apprentice, the enforcer of his master’s will amidst the first order. the student held little care for the structure and function of the institution he was now a part of, even as he stood in that dark chamber and heeded snoke's lessons, his tirades uncovering the ideological conflicts underlying the foundations of the order. his early assignments revolved around elimination of such political opposition through covert operations, assassinations, tacked under new republic mandates.with funding from occupied and allied planets, the construction of starkiller base began on the planet of ilum, a weapon of mass destruction to end all war, crushing the small, unorganised sparks of defiance that burned across the cosmos. ren was sent as snoke’s envoy, named co-commander of the finalizer alongside the project’s inventor, general hux. neither were pleased by this development.

if snoke's promises of power and illusions of grandeur eventually turned to threats, ren did not seem to notice. the hand on his shoulder turned to claws, and power became a collar fastened around his throat. he did not see it like that then. in the dark, everything looks the same.finding skywalkers is the first proper assignment he is given, the eradication of the jedi's final totem.he buries the memories of a boy's father and mother in the graveyard of his heart, with the rest of his ghosts. in his dreams, he no longer sees the temple, but a girl. the thread of his destiny is interwoven with a girl from jakku. he dreams of sand and ash and blood. he knows he must either sway her or destroy her, for he also knows she will be his tomb. once more, he feels the familiar tug of destiny and of a future he cannot outrun. the light tears him apart, vicious in its persistence, and conflict eats away at him once more.the new republic is annihilated. the hosnian cataclysm. if ren found the display overt and unnecessary, he did not raise these concerns with the supreme leader, for it was not his place, nor was statecraft a matter he considers himself involved in. defiance thumps against his ribcage, tasting of revelation: when he had lost his ability to formulate thoughts and decisions, he was not certain, but he found he did not enjoy the stifling sensation of shadows pressing down on his senses, his mind, his being.desperate to overcome such notions and to prove to his master, and to himself, that he will not be swayed, he slays some boy's father. chewbacca shoots him, he cradles his wound. when he looks down, the blood on his glove looks black in the dim light of the bridge, the final shade of red.ren duels his new adversary on the tearing hinges of starkiller, minutes before its decimation as resistance forces advance on the first order: erratic and unable to channel his power to its full extent, he loses to her, and the anger that overcomes him is vile and bitter.

after the loss of starkiller base, the first order had been forced to reevaluate its projects and reallocate resources. the war stretched across multiple fronts, resistance emerging from varying factions in the wake of the brutal destruction of the republic in outcry to the shocking brutality. their political hold was severely weakened, as was their image - trade was slowed, neutral planets voicing their dismay, and funding was at a low. wealthy planets which had been allied the first order were, and those of imperial background that had been swift in their affiliation for the retention of benefits the empire had granted, all begun backing down in dissatisfaction of several of snoke's initiatives.burning with shame, bested by an untrained scavenger and a rebel stormtrooper, ren was left to drag himself to his master, failure heavy on his mind. berated, he received one more chance to prove himself and to bring the girl, ridding himself of the persistent light that nestled in his gut, eating away at him like a parasite: paranoia bit into his thoughts and anger ravished between his ribs, tearing at his gut. it was an indignity he refused to digest.the red of the throneroom swivels and shifts, catching in the reflective floors. the lightsaber thrums into life, slashing through the creature upon the throne – teachings are cast away like a heap of broken idols – a burning altar – a tempered temple – fallen at the steps of a sudden coup. with killing snoke, kylo has brought down his god, and was only then able to step foot on his own path, having had enough of being tied to ideologies that were inherently foreign. his purpose lay clear before him, this freedom to pursue the power he sought.taking down a totem teaches the attitude of liberation — doing away with the doctrine and saying: i ate my god and i became him.to become one's own creature is liberation. to be one's own monster is freedom. it is to stand at the precipice of night, screaming: my evils belong to me, i own them.

he ascends as supreme leader, the sovereign of a warring galaxy. in the aftermath of liberation, he finds himself in the clutches of bureaucracy. the first order is a thousand-headed institution, with a thousand mouths and a thousand more eyes. tendons of directorate pull every which way when high command hears of snoke's demise, supposedly at the hands of the scavenger. taking back the reigns is no easy task, prompting him to turn to hux with begrudging urgency. they both find themselves in need of an ally, forging a tentaive truce.ren wanted to stand on his own pedestal amidst the dark. he constructed his own altar, upon it the inscription: my villainy is mine, i own it. there is liberation in the power to build an image for oneself.there is a learning curve, from being schooled on the bloody history of the imperial remnant to the corruption of the new republic, its failing practices, the political upheaval that had festered beneath its democratic elevation. through the faint curtain of childhood, he recalled his mother's hushed whispers with mon mothma, but youth had blurred his comprehension of the intricacies underlying their conversation. he hadn't cared much for politics upon joining snoke and his institution, but such knowledge was now necessary if he were to maintain his position. he needed the institution's might to propel his own ideals, and in turn, he would need to nourish it with parade and power.through the joint efforts between himself and hux, the institution reconstructs itself upon the late admiral sloane's initial visualizations. military forces are directed toward conquest, swiftly subjugating the galaxy under a new reign, with the ultimate aim of establishing a strong, centralized government.the days that followed were filled with skimming manuals and guides of polity, practicing the speeches hux took the liberty of preparing. his hands shook with the focus he steeled himself into retaining and his gaze felt bare without the mask, which he had been instructed to drop. an image was being projected. a mythology was being drafted. he had a role to play, a god in a can, the supreme leader whose war was waged in the name of a better galaxy.in the dark demesnes of evening, the voice of snoke haunted the crevices of his mind. he never seemed to be alone. spurred by his anger, he sought out on a pilgrimage to master the dark side of the force in its entirety, trailing out ancient artifacts and creatures that may aid him in achieving ultimate power and mastery of the dark, so he may be rid of the contract he had signed in blood.

with ren’s ascension as supreme leader following his hasty coup and the murder of snoke, the first order is left directionless. upon realizing the magnitude of the institution that now lay at his feet, the supremacy destroyed, in tandem with the eerie silence that had settled over his mind & being, ren is at his wits’ end and forced to call a tentative truce with general hux, despite their turbulent dynamic. they pursue the aim of establishing a centralised, military-based government spanning the entirety of the galaxy through the combined might of their army and sway over the political scene. ren remains the head of the institution and the commander of the troops, running the military along with his knights, leaving hux on the occupied coruscant as the new chancellor.among the new imposition of policies is the propagation of democratisation and security of the government, aiming to re-direct the first order away from snoke’s vision and shift it towards hux’s. in a move meant to distract, ren & hux enter into a political marriage, divulging a united front to their opposition.

This deep hunger, he feels, could devour the force itself. He has not yielded to the dark, he has swallowed it instead. Having embraced his powers, he sets out to master them. The First Order seeks to conquer the galaxy and Ren will lead them, but his own agenda far outweighs his desire to rule. Implementing new Sith troopers and improving the state of the armies, kylo launches an occupation of coruscant, taking the imperial palace as the official new headquarters of the institution – a new parliament – establishing a tentative truce with newly promoted Chancellor Hux, and leaving him in charge of the political sphere. Kylo himself takes charge of the militant forces, eventually setting off to chase his ghosts, despite being counselled otherwise. Political alliances & diplomatic voyages are the last things on his mind, though he is caught in a precarious balancing act: he must learn to navigate this new government, to uphold the institution, to play at politics, to be a symbol, which sees to him spending many days cooped up in the palace when his heart yearns to chase the call of the dark.All the while, he seeks out ancient beings and creatures, artefacts, and scrolls, demanding answers from the sith of the past until he comes into his own and becomes one with the dark. he sees himself dying in his dreams – triumphing over Rey – in another, slain by her – but he has not come this far to die, he thinks / he needs to overturn fate.
